Mullion Golf Club: The Story so far.

A Public Meeting was held in the Public Assembly Rooms, Helston on the 26 June 1895 for the purpose of forming a Golf Club and it was agreed that the club should be called "The Mullion Golf Club".

The following officials were elected to serve on the committee:

President: Mr Sydney Davey
Vice Presidents: The Right Honourable Lord Robartes, Mr F Y Hill Mayor of Helston
Captain L Rogers (who later declined the vice presidency)
Captain: Mr W Sich
Treasurer: Mr E P Kendall
Secretaries: Mr J Scholfield & Mr R Thomas
Committeemen: Mr F T Brooke-Fox, Mr J A Lang, Mr A R Thomas

Mullion Golf Club situated on the cliffs of the Lizard Peninsula is not only the most Southerly course but one of the most beautiful courses in the West Country. Framed by sandy coves and protected reed beds, the course, now well past its centenary, has always attracted the literary giants who not only enjoyed the golf but also fascinated by the ambience. Conan Doyle, A P Herbert, A A Milne played regularly during several visits each year.

Following the Second World War, with declining membership and the “ordinary” folk’s interest in golf not yet established, this was to follow in the 1960’s, led to financial problems. The club’s debenture holders, the original purchase of the club having been funded by the issue of debentures in the 1920’s, caused the sale of the club’s land and buildings to the National Trust. A few local stalwarts persuaded the Trust to allow golf to continue to be played on a part of the course and as golf grew in popularity, the Trust agreed to the re-establishment of the 18-hole course.

With course improvements and modern facilities added in recent years, Mullion stands comparison with any rival for a testing and sporting day's golf. It celebrated it’s centenary in 1995 and in 2001 it hosted the centennial championships of the Cornwall Golf Union, having hosted the inaugural Championship in 1901.

With thriving Senior, Lady, Junior as well as Mens sections within the club, Mullion welcomes visitors and potential new members and offers them a warm and friendly welcome, and an invitation to join in with our many competitions.
